Months after Sony stirred the pot by saying that the company — including PlayStation — doesn’t have enough original IP, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst has reassured fans that all those beloved dormant franchises haven’t been forgotten about. In a new interview with Famitsu, Hulst said that PlayStation’s extensive portfolio remains an “important asset.”
Astro Bot has revived conversation about dormant PlayStation IP
Following the release of Astro Bot, which features cameos from a plethora of beloved games including legacy PlayStation titles, fans have been demanding revival of IPs like Bloodborne.
Famitsu quizzed Hulst about this, to which the PlayStation head honcho said that Sony continues to “explore opportunities to leverage our legacy IP as well as develop new franchises” in order to strengthen PlayStation’s portfolio. “Our extensive IP portfolio is an important asset for PlayStation,” he reiterated.
While Hulst’s statement doesn’t mean we’ll see a new Resistance or inFamous game in the near future, it’s far more encouraging than Sony’s leadership saying that the company’s various divisions don’t have enough original IP.
“Whether it’s for games, films or anime, we don’t have that much IP that we fostered from the beginning,” Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki told Financial Times back in September, raising a few eyebrows.
