Implicit Conversions, the company involved in porting PlayStation classics to PS Plus and PS Store, is looking into PS3 emulation. As rumors continue to circulate that Sony is attempting to bring select PS3 games to PS5 natively, Implicit Conversions has confirmed that efforts are under way, but there’s no guarantee that they’ll bear fruit.
PS3 architecture has long vexed the emulation community
Hawk-eyed fans spotted a roadmap published on Implicit Conversion’s website, which states that the company is “researching and prototyping the possibility of a PlayStation 3 emulator package for [emulation engine] Syrup.”
Implicit Conversions added the PS3 emulation project to its roadmap a month ago, and changed its status to “dreaming about” just a week ago, suggesting that it still has a ways to go before we see results, if any.
Tech experts have said that despite all the efforts, PS3 emulation won’t be easy as the console’s cell architecture will continue to be a major roadblock. Recently, however, a YouTuber fiddled with an AMD BC-25 mining card and PS5 silicon, and managed to run Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and LittleBigPlanet 3 via RPCS3 emulator with no issues.
That said, Implicit Conversions is working on a commercial solution as opposed to a personal project, so it remains to be seen if we’ll finally get PS3 games running natively on the PS5.
