Sony’s Trying to Resolve PlayStation Lag Issues in Online Games

Sony appears to be looking into ways to resolve lag in online games experienced by PlayStation players, especially those with an unstable internet connection. In a new patent published by the company, PlayStation aims to resolve latency issues by utilizing a machine learning-based model to predict players’ button inputs, and execute them automatically in case of delays.

How Sony aims to address lag in online PlayStation games

As spotted by Tech4Gamers, the patent in question titled “Timed Input/Action Release” was only just published this month. According to the document published by PatentScope, Sony’s system will be “configured to release user commands to a computer game at a time when the command correctly aligns with what is going on in the computer game.”

To reiterate, this model is based on players’ actions, so there shouldn’t be any concerns about unfair advantage in online games. Sony simply wants to reduce latency for players who are unable to fix the issue themselves, and ensure that they have an enjoyable experience.

It’s an interesting patent, and one that might be welcomed by players who don’t have the option to purchase faster internet or those who don’t have the best experience in online games due to distant servers (not every game is Call of Duty after all).

Patents don’t always materialize, however, so keep those expectations in check.
