Ori series developer Thomas Mahler has said that he’ll be surprised if Sony doesn’t eventually drop PlayStation exclusives like Microsoft. Mahler, who founded Moon Studios, developed the Ori games exclusively for Xbox platforms and PC. The games made their way to all platforms except PlayStation. Mahler has since spoken out against platform exclusives.
Why PlayStation may move away from exclusives
In a lengthy post on X, Mahler tweeted his support for Xbox boss Phil Spencer, arguing that he has the right approach to multiplatform releases in this day and age. He revealed that Moon Studios partnered with Take-Two on No Rest for the Wicked precisely because it wanted to reach more players rather than be limited to one or two platforms.
“In my emails to Phil over the years, I always brought up how crazy it would’ve been if you could’ve only watched certain DVDs on Sony players, while for others you would’ve needed a Samsung player, etc.,” Mahler argued. “Consoles have been stuck attracting the same 100-150m players for over two decades now. If we want to see the industry grow, it needs to be easier for everyone to access the content.”
Mahler added that he will be surprised if Sony doesn’t eventually follow Microsoft’s footsteps given that both PlayStation and Xbox are almost identical. Nintendo, on the other hand, is expected to continue doing its own thing.
