PlayStation’s Difficult Year Culminates in Big Leadership Changes

Sony Group has announced a big PlayStation leadership shuffle at Sony Interactive Entertainment following a tumultuous year. Effective April 1, the joint CEO arrangement at SIE will come to an end, with Hideaki Nishino becoming the sole CEO and president of the division. Hermen Hulst will no longer be co-CEO, and will now report to Nishino.

PlayStation leadership shuffle welcomed by investors

There’s some speculation that Hulst has been somewhat demoted, but although he is now reporting to his former Platform Business Group counterpart, Hulst will continue to lead the Studio Business Group. In simple terms, Hulst is still in charge of PlayStation Studios and all things video games, except he’ll be under Nishino now.

Elsewhere, Hiroki Totoki is vacating his position at SIE to become president and CEO of Sony Group Corporation. Lin Tao, a senior vice president at SIE, will follow Totoki into Sony Group as the new CFO.

These changes follow a difficult year at PlayStation that saw mass layoffs, studio closures, a multimillion dollar disaster called Concord, and numerous project cancellations. The corporate restructuring has already been positively received, if Sony’s soaring stock in the Tokyo Stock Exchange is anything to go by.

Here’s hoping this shuffle results in positive changes for players.
