Another PS5/PS4 Multiplayer Game Shutting Down, Bringing 2025’s Total to 4

Live service casualties continue to pile up in 2025 as another PS5, PS4 multiplayer game is scheduled to be sunset. Released on last-gen platforms in 2019 and on current-gen platforms in 2021, Monster Hunter-like free-to-play RPG Dauntless is shutting down after developer Phoenix Labs laid off most of its staff.

PS5, PS4 multiplayer RPG Dauntless shutting down in May

In a brief announcement published on Dauntless social media pages, Phoenix Labs announced that the game is scheduled to go offline on May 29, 2025 at 11:45 p.m. PST. Fans have been thanked for “being a part of the Dauntless journey,” but no further details have been provided.

Between now and May 29, Dauntless will not receive any more updates or additional content. The game did receive a major update back in December, which didn’t go down well with players due to its handling of monetization and revamped weapons and armor systems.

Phoenix Labs underwent two rounds of layoffs within a year, with the last round in January 2025 resulting in most of its staff being let go.

A day after Dauntless goes offline, WB Games will pull the plug on its once-promising fighter MultiVersus. Then, it’s Ubisoft’s turn to switch off servers for its free-to-play shooter XDefiant in June, with Capcom’s Resident Evil Re:Verse following suit.
