After a couple of delays, Ubisoft finally released Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Professional gamers who purchased a PS5 Pro get the added bonus of enhancements that take advantage of the hardware’s extended capabilities. Although what is already implemented is great, it mysteriously did not use the console’s exclusive PSSR upscaling tech for its enhanced graphics modes. However, someone very familiar with the game’s tech teases the machine learning tech will be utilized in the future.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows technical architect teases PSSR implementation for PS5 Pro
In a recent X (formerly Twitter) post from Assassin’s Creed technical architect Nicolas Lopez, he remarks on the work himself and Ubisoft have done with the game’s PS5 Pro enhancements. Replying to the tweet, an X user asked why they opted to not use PSSR for its upscaling technique. Lopez simply replied, “I’d stay tuned.”

Digital Foundry recently posted a video about the Assassin’s Creed Shadows PS5 Pro enhancements. They found the work Ubisoft put into this upgraded console version was exceptional. Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie even called it the “most transformative PS5 Pro upgrade.”
“I came away from AC Shadows impressed with the technical package that Ubisoft has assembled,” says Mackenzie in their analysis. “There are so many neat technical touches here – from the dynamic wind and particle systems that make the world feel alive, to the Metal Gear Rising style environmental slicing, to the headlining virtualized geometry and RTGI effects. Shadows presents a beautifully realized open world environment that really draws you in, and is up there with the most convincing worlds in video games.”
However, one particularly peculiar omission they found in Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ PS5 Pro graphics modes was the lack of PSSR implementation. While not too odd as the results were still impressive without the AI-upscaling tech, Ubisoft’s own press materials stated it would utilize the technology.
