Earlier in the year, Sony estimated that around 15 million PlayStation 3 consoles would be sold by the end of fiscal 2010. After the rough start of the PS3 in late 2006, few would have guessed that the company would be aiming for such a huge number within only a few years. Surprisingly, not only did Sony announce such a large goal, it even expects to meet that target by the end of the year.
During a public meeting in Tokyo with members of the press, Kazuo Hirai of Sony shared that the PlayStation 3 is on its way to meeting the 15 million projected sales mark set by the company earlier in the year. Hirai directly stated the following:
“Sales at the end of the year are as we expected”
This is a long stretch when considering the PlayStation 3 has sold around seven million units heading into December. However, that stretch isn’t quite so long after looking at the PS3’s amazing upcoming library of titles, and with room for a potential price-drop, Sony has plenty of ammo left in its arsenal.
