Often times the breaking point between a PC gamer and console gamer is the ability to create and use mods. Consoles have rarely, if ever, seen this feature legitimately, but advances in software technology may turn the tide, and Skyrim could be on the front line.
You’ll see the words may, could, and possibly in here a lot, and you should take them to heart. The PC version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will come with a modification tool called The Creation Kit. This wonderful piece of software means that for PC gamers Skyrim never has to truly end. Sure, the developer’s campaign and story will have a finale, but as we’ve seen with recent play, create, share titles like Little Big Planet and ModNation Racers gamers have a seemingly limitless amount of creative ideas which can keep a great game going long after the main story is over. Recent word from Skyrim‘s executive producer, Todd Howard, indicates that these benefits don’t necessarily need to be limited to PC gamers, since all the user-generated content works on consoles.
It works on all the consoles. As far as the 360 and PS3, right now there’s not an avenue for us to make that available, but we’d very much like to find a way. We have talked to Microsoft and Sony, and so there’s a chance it might happen one day, [but] I don’t see it happening for release.
We’d like to see it happen, because it works, it’s how we made the game. I think it’s something really cool about what we do, but 90 per cent of our audience is on the consoles, so 90 per cent of our audience can’t even see this thing. So if we can solve that we’d like to.
And we would love to see those guys make it happen. Considering the staggering majority of gamers on consoles versus PC, it seems it would be in everyone’s benefit to have this feature available. Valve announced a little while back that a very similar feature would be available for Portal 2 thanks to Steam, leaving us to wonder if Bethesda could create a similar service, or even strike a deal with Valve to use their platform. Either way, we’ll be keeping an eye on this, and planning our own RPG adventure to create in case it comes true.
