Sony considered going digital-only with the successor to the PlayStation 3, a report from The Wall Street Journal claims.
The report claims that “people familiar with the matter” said that Sony had considered dropping optical disk drives from their next-gen console in a favor of a download-only plan, but ultimately rejected the idea. Sony is alleged to have nixed the idea due to the inconsistency of Internet connections around the world and that users with slower Internet connections would have difficulties downloading games with a download-only plan.
The report also claims that Sony is planning to release their next-gen console in 2013.
A Sony spokesperson declined to comment on the report.
Two years ago, Kaz Hirai commented that there was always going to be a “requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium.”
Sony has made no announcements about their next-gen console, but if there are any, PSLS will keep you posted.
