Many have criticized Square Enix for recklessly pursuing the almighty dollar in lieu of creating the high quality titles the company used to be known for. One surprisingly solid effort from the company came in form of all the exclusive PSP titles they’ve released – FF7: Crisis Core, Dissidia, FF: Type Zero, and KH: Birth By Sleep. The titles are all examples of high quality original games that Square Enix released on a system known for scaring away developers.
Hajime Tabata, the director behind two of those big budget blockbusters, (Crisis Core, and Type Zero) has expressed interest in developing for the PlayStation Vita:
I had an impression [that] it was an exceedingly good piece of hardware. Since I [had been] making Final Fantasy titles on the PSP, I have an interest in [developing] for a larger device. As someone concerned with game production, there is nothing other than the Vita that offers that largeness, high density and luminescence, and ability to [render] high-quality images.
As wonderful and exciting as that sounds, I have a hard time imagining Square Enix green-lighting such a project given the Vita’s abysmal sales. What are your thoughts on a Vita Final Fantasy with Crisis Core/Type-0 production values?
