It’s very rare for us at PlayStation LifeStyle to hand out a perfect 10/10 to a game, and it’s even rarer for us to review that same game twice, giving it a perfect score both times, with two different reviewers. But Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch isn’t an ordinary game, in fact, it’s our January 2013 Game of the Month!
To help prove how Ni no Kuni managed to attain that feat, here’s some rather glowing statements taken directly from Cameron’s North American review of Ni no Kuni:
“Past the story and its characters, Ni no Kuni delivers a unique style of gameplay that is very refreshing to the genre. The combat is a combination of action and turn-based that takes a little bit of getting used to, but after a few fights it feels natural. Players are able to run around the battlefield at their own leisure but must select an action from your combat menu to perform it. It feels a little strange at first glance, but fits extremely well into the game.”
“I have been asked a few times which games Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch resembles the most and, to be honest, I cannot think of a single one. This is such a refreshing and unique experience that brings together a solid story and characters with gorgeous visuals and a fun combat system.”
“This collaboration between Studio Ghibli and Level-5 has produced a beautiful tale of friendship, courage, and adventure that covers multiple age groups and brings older gamers back to a time when they first started to fall in love with RPGs. With over 30-60 hours of gameplay, this is a game that you cannot afford to pass up, it is a true gem. To put it best, this game gave me the same feeling as the first time I saw the original Star Wars trilogy.”
And now Heath’s thoughts from his imported review of Ni no Kuni:
Virtually every aspect of Ni no Kuni is a hit, from its likeable cast to its fun battles; from its inspiring soundtrack to its rewarding exploration; from its imaginative story to the excellent pacing that takes you through it — and this is all ignoring the notion that this is one of the most visually impressive games of the current console generation. It’s a new game built from the best parts of our favorite classics. If you’ve recently wished that the RPGs of today had a little more in common with their elders from the 16 and 32-bit eras — no, wait, check that — if you have ever liked a Japanese RPG at all, you owe Ni no Kuni a shot.
Runner-Up: DmC Devil May Cry
We were originally going to make Ni no Kuni our runner-up for Game of the Month since we did two reviews, but in the interest of fairness, DmC Devil May Cry earned the award as the second best game of January 2013.
Receving an 8.5 from Alex, he broke down why you should spend your money on Dante’s latest adventure:
To put it simply, DmC: Devil May Cry breathes new life into Capcom’s beloved action franchise and anyone who enjoys this type of game experience would be foolish to pass it up.
