Medal of Honor Basically Dead, Taken “Out of Rotation” – EA Blames Critics, Consumers

We thought Medal of Honor: Warfighter was pretty terrible, a consensus echoed by most critics and gamers. After the terrible reviews, the game failed to make much of an impression on the sales charts and was considered a flop – such a huge flop, in fact, that the renowned franchise is essentially being killed off.

During an earnings call for the third quarter of its 2013 fiscal year today, EA Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore said:

This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of the rotation, and have a plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings.

As for why it did poorly, he explained:

We struggled with two challenges: the slowdown that impacted the entire sector and poor critical and commercial reception for Medal of Honor Warfighter. Medal of Honor was an obvious miss. The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers.

Critics were polarized and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved.

The excuse is a bizarre one, because the game didn’t focus on combat authenticity to a remarkable level, and critics weren’t polarized – they were almost universally united in disappointment.

Of course, as with any game that has sold a certain amount, there are always those that did enjoy the game, but the numbers clearly aren’t in its favor.
