Ask PSLS Special: Is This Leaked PS4 Trailer Showing the Console Real? Nope (Update: Double Nope)

Update: Kotaku is reporting that a Sony representative told them this trailer isn’t official.

Original Story: In case you haven’t seen it yet, a trailer was put on YouTube yesterday (below), supposedly showing off the PlayStation 4 in all its glory. After watching this and seeing hundreds of sites cover it, Sebastian began to call its legitimacy into question, prompting us to create a very special Ask PSLS: “Is This Leaked PS4 Trailer Showing the Console Real?”

Anthony Severino – E-L33T (@Sev_Anthony)

What? Are you kidding me? This is so fucking real. Don’t you know that E3 is right around the corner and no websites are ever wrong with early rumors about anything, let alone consoles? I mean, look at all the other legit rumors. You know, like the PS4 will bake cakes for you like an Easy Bake Oven, or that it’ll have an array of six PlayStation Moves on the controller? I’m calling it now, this is the realest video in gaming history.

Chandler Wood – Lights, Camera, Action (@FinchStrife)

It’s convincing, sure, but I’m saying this is a fake. There are some very talented people out there who know how to use cameras, lights, and editing programs on a professional looking level. There is a subliminal flash at the beginning of the video that uses existing images of the DualShock 4 and PS4 Eye. The shaped lights in the eyes are a nice touch, and they certainly got a cadre of people together to act for it as well (at least eight unique people if my count is right). But I’m still saying it’s a very convincing fake. But wouldn’t it be cool if Sony actually leaked this to take away from the Microsoft event next week?

Dan Oravasaari – Official (@FoolsJoker)

While the video does look almost professional, some of the reactions are poorly acted and should not pass for an official product . This is also not to mention that the video doesn’t contain any floating babies, meaning it cannot possibly real – especially for Sony. That said, I wouldn’t mind seeing that as a commercial since it does remind me of the original ps1 ads, something I think Sony needs to go back to.

Jason Dunning – PV-Arhhh! (@Jasonad21)

There’s going to be more in-depth analysis of the trailer from other PSLS staffers here, but I just wanted to say that if Sony wants the PlayStation 4 to look like a PVR combined with a HDD and given the color scheme of the slim Xbox, then this is definitely real.

Sebastian Moss – Bring it On (@SebMoss)

Ok, it’s a nice trailer filled with bearded men making O-faces, but it’s faker than a Californian’s cleavage.

At 1 sec you see an image of the controller and PS4 Eye that’s all white and out of place in such a dark vid, but that’s because it’s the only one available right now. What, an ‘ad’ all about glowing doesn’t have a bloody glowing controller in it?

Why are they only using old inFamous footage? Where’s all that Uncharted: Sully’s Serendipity gameplay we’ll see at E3? Oh right, it’s not available on YouTube yet.

The ‘PS4’ has that odd gloss that only computerized models make, rather than real, solid objects. Take an actual close look at those USB drives and marvel at how fake they look.

The box has a compact disc logo, while a Japanese reporter was told that the PS4 doesn’t support CDs.

And, most damning of all, they’re revealing the box at E3… so why on Earth would they make a trailer for E3 where it’s really hard to see the box? Durp.

If this trailer does prove to be real and the PlayStation 4 looks exactly as shown, Sebastian promises to post a picture of himself on the site, with Kaz’s head super-imposed onto his body.
