Update: Capcom has confirmed the new Strider game, which is set for an early 2014 release date. Here’s a video announcing it:
Original Story: In a very surprising announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom Senior Producer Andrew Szymanski revealed that a brand new Strider video game will be coming to the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC, courtesy of Double Helix Games.
The reason this is happening is thanks to “fan demand,” “enthusiasm for the character” over the years, and “Capcom Unity surveys, forum posts, and fan requests,” with Patrick Gilmore, Double Helix Studio Head, explaining what you can expect from Strider:
For the new game, Double Helix and our partner team in Osaka, Japan, concentrated on an ultra-responsive control system, with incredibly satisfying combat options in every traversal context—standing, running, wall climbing, hanging, aerial and more.
New to the franchise is the massive interconnected world of Kazakh City which players can explore in any direction they choose. The traditional level structure has been replaced with a retraceable world and a deep ability upgrade system which enables Hiryu to build more power and abilities to penetrate ever deeper into the dystopian adventure.
Double Helix is thrilled to be working with some of the original Strider creative leaders from Capcom’s Osaka production offices to bring another fan favorite franchise back to life!
Further details suggest that this is a side-scrolling game with 2.5D visuals, so don’t be surprised if this is a downloadable title.
If any more details surface, we’ll be sure to let you know.
