Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and Ubisoft Reflections have come together with several other video game companies to help the British government fund future game designers. The Next Gen Skills Academy, which aims to assist visual effects, animation and video games industries in the UK, has already received about £6.5 million ($10.6 million) from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.
The academy is planning to offer entry level qualifications, higher level apprenticeships, short courses and online learning opportunities for budding video game developers. The group said that it wants to build up the necessary skills in newcomers that game studios are looking for when hiring. Over the next three years, the UK government will release £2.7 million ($4.4 million) to the fund while companies involved in the program will inject a further £3.6 million ($5.9 million) in investment.
This is certainly good news for those who are starting out in the games industry in the UK, and it echoes the government’s commitment to the industry.
