At one point expected to launch in late 2013/early 2014, The Witness from Thekla is coming to PlayStation 4 on January 26, 2016 in North America and Europe, President Jonathan Blow announced today.
Blow talked about the reason behind The Witness’s lengthy development:
We originally thought The Witness would be coming out toward the end of the PS4 launch window, but … there’s just been a lot to do. I think when the game is in your hands, you’ll find it to be intricate and deep, and also unlike anything else you have played.
While The Witness was originally thought to offer 8-12 hours of gameplay when development began, Blow says, “The game we’ve finally built is around 10 times as big as that.” So, completionists can expect anywhere from 80-100 hours of gameplay.
Between now and launch, Thekla will be “fixing bugs, refining the feel of play, and making sure everything is just right for January.”
Provided nothing’s changed in the last few years, The Witness will be a PS4 timed-exclusive “for a while.”
