Sony Shuts Down PlayStation MVP Program

Starting tomorrow, April 18, the PlayStation MVP program will cease to exist. For those who aren’t aware of what it is, it’s a program designed to engage community members, the participants of which received a number of benefits including merchandise, tickets to events, free games, access to betas, and more. Here’s how Sony officially described MVPs:

An MVP is a regular and dedicated PlayStation user that helps to support PlayStation Network by playing proactive roles during events, generating useful resources for the community, and providing feedback to PlayStation from their perspective as engaged gamers on PSN. MVPs are not employees of Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc., its parent company or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates (“SCEA”). They don’t formulate policy, or moderate PSN. They are bound to the same Terms of Service and User Agreement as any other user of PSN. They are simply highly engaged gamers that care about PlayStation and the PlayStation community.

According to a NeoGAF user, there has been a lot of confusion lately surrounding the MVP program, which has been running for quite some time. MVPs were expecting some sudden changes as a result but weren’t expecting Sony to shut down the program altogether. The company released the following statement:

As of Monday, April 18, PlayStation will no longer actively support the MVP Program. We want to thank you for your participation in the program and your enthusiasm in making PlayStation the best place to play. We will continue to explore ways to empower the vibrant PlayStation community across our on-console and digital ecosystem.

Please note that this change does not affect the Support MVP Program.

Program members are quite disappointed by the announcement but Sony hasn’t explained why it was shut down.
