Ubisoft has announced that their upcoming action brawler, For Honor, will no longer support split-screen gameplay. This disappointing news comes from a video (which you can watch above) that the French publisher has released that recaps their recent closed alpha. It also shows that the Ubisoft Montreal developed game is still actively being worked on ahead of its February 14, 2017 release date if features are still being decided upon.
In the video, producer Stephane Cardin explains why the feature was removed. “It was a feature that we loved,” said Cardin. “But when we looked at what needs to be done to support online co-op, for us it was critical to make a decision now so we can polish all the features at the AAA level and make sure that we have the most amazing experience.”
While it’s never good news that a planned feature is getting removed from a game, it’s worth remembering that For Honor will still support cooperative play. It’s just that players will have to team up online instead of on the couch. It’s clear that the developers weren’t happy with the quality of the local co-op play, and didn’t want to include it if it wasn’t up to their high standards. That’s completely understandable, even if it’ll leave some gamers disappointed.
For Honor releases February 14, 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It’s being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, and was originally unveiled at E3 2015. Players can choose to fight as knights, samurai, and Viking warriors in the game’s offline and online modes.
