PSX 2016 – TowerFall Creator Matt Thorson Announces New Platformer Celeste

Three years on from the release of hit platformer TowerFall Ascension, developer Matt Thorson is gearing up to launch his follow-up, Celeste, for PlayStation 4.

Currently slated for mid-2017, Thorson and Co. brought a playable build of Celeste to PlayStation Experience this weekend, introducing the PlayStation faithful to a single-player platformer that involves scaling a vast and dangerous mountain. Much like TowerFall before it, the design and aesthetic of Celeste is inspired by the SNES era, as well as some modern indie classics such as Super Meat Boy. Here’s what Thorson had to share about the dangers lying in wait, via PS Blog:

The mountain in Celeste isn’t an ordinary one. You’ll climb through more than 250 stages, across striking areas like an abandoned city, ancient ruins, precarious cliff sides, and a haunted resort. The mountain has a lot of history, and so does your character. You’ll be battling your inner demons as much as the environment in your fight to reach the summit. There aren’t many people out here, but you can meet a few quirky characters to keep you company if you search them out.

Celeste is in development for PS4 and will see a release mid-way through 2017.
