Helldivers Studio Says Making Games PS4 Pro Compatible Is Easy

Earlier this year, PlayStation 4 system architect Mark Cerny talked to Gamasutra about how it was Sony’s goal to make PS4 Pro implementation in games as easy as possible. “The target was to make sure that support [for the PS4 Pro] could be done for a fraction of a percent of the overall effort,” said Cerny. “I’ve run the math, and it’s 0.2 or 0.3 percent for these projects — some of them. So at that point, I think it’s very natural for the development community to support the platform.”

That claim has now been backed up by Swedish developer Arrowhead Game Studios. The developer’s vice president Patrik Lasota confirmed Cerny’s claim when asked by Gaming Bolt. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’d say that the minimum effort is probably even less [than 0.2-0.3% of the overall effort], counting the work hours involved compared to the work hours put into making the game. We did a bit more than that and yet it took us very little time to get the game running on PS4 Pro in 4K.”

This is certainly great news for developers, as PS4 Pro compatibility has become the norm going forward. Sony making this a non-hassle to implement, means that developers will happily support the added install base. It’ll also help make their games look (and hopefully run) better as well.

Gaming Bolt also asked Lasota about his thoughts on the PS4 Pro, and he gave an answer that seems to be pretty common surrounding the new console. “I think it’s a nice option for those that really want to do 4K gaming or want a higher framerate,” said Lasota. “It was not enough for me personally to warrant an upgrade of my PS4, but I like that the option is there.”
