With the NPD declaring Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare the best-selling game of 2016 in the United States, Activision sent out a statement today adding that it was “the #1 top-selling video game on console in the U.S. for 2016 based on total revenue and units sold from physical and digital sales (excluding hardware bundle sales).”
Activision also said Call of Duty was the #1 console franchise in the US for the eighth consecutive year, and was the #1 console franchise worldwide for the seventh time in the last eight years, based on revenue. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said:
We’re thankful to our players for once again putting Call of Duty on top, and we recognize how rare this is – to do year after year. That’s why we push to deliver innovations and incredible gameplay that are worthy of the best fans in the world time and again. And we have an exciting year ahead in 2017.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 was the #8 best-selling game of 2016 in the US (and #1 in 2015), and it was still the top-selling game of this generation as of August 2016.
The first DLC pack for Infinite Warfare, Sabotage launches on January 31 for PlayStation 4. Leaderboards will also arrive this month.
