Film site ComingSoon recently talked to the writer behind the upcoming Uncharted film Joe Carnahan, who revealed that he penned an R-rated script. “When I wrote Uncharted, I didn’t spare the rod,” said Carnahan. “I wrote it the way the video game is. They swear in the game, they’re kinda foul-mouthed, and I kept all that stuff intact, and I definitely didn’t write it as a PG-13 movie. I wrote it the way that movie should be written.”
While there’s no denying that Nathan Drake has a foul mouth, this has led some fans to worry about the film. When asked about the movie’s tone by a fan on Twitter, Naughty Dog Creative Director Neil Druckmann responded by saying “No one at Naughty Dog has read the script.” Thus Druckmann had no clue what the movie was about, let alone the tone that the R-rated flick was going for.
Carnahan goes into describe the character as the “anti-Indiana Jones” in the interview. He made the distinction that Nathan Drake is very much a thief, not an archaeologist, and that the role plays a major part in the games. “I think Amy Hennig did it when she wrote the game. She made Drake very much an anti-Indiana Jones, you know? Don’t forget, for that first game after that pirate attack, Drake and Sully leave Elena behind; they dump her. Indiana Jones would never do something like that. That’s a rogue act.”
While it’s understandably concerning for some fans that Naughty Dog hasn’t seen the film’s script, it’s clear that Carnahan respects the games. He also has a pretty solid track record of making fun action movies, as he wrote 2010’s The A-Team, and penned the upcoming Bad Boys For Life. The Uncharted film is set to start filming later this year.
