First Details Emerge About Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer

New details surfaced on Final Fantasy XV‘s Episode Gladiolus DLC yesterday, and now information on the game’s upcoming multiplayer mode have come to light. Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata talked to Jeremy Parish over at Polygon about the game’s future, and how the multiplayer will tie into the main game.

Here’s what Tabata had to say about the exciting new offering:

There are a lot of things I can’t really say about the multiplayer future just yet, but it will tie into the game — the main game — at some point in the story. And for the multiplayer feature, we are less focused on playing as the four main characters but rather as an avatar that the user creates themselves. So rather than having you and your friends play as these four guys and experience their journey again together, it’s more about the journey that you and your friends have together with each other in this world.

While Tabata was light on specifics, there is a lot to unpack here. The big news is that players won’t be playing as one of the main characters, and will instead be controlling a user-created avatar. It also sounds a lot like Final Fantasy Type-0‘s multiplayer, which allows players to drop-in and out of the PSP title. It sounds like a solid twist on the current formula, and a new way for players to explore Eos.

There’s a lot more about the future of Final Fantasy XV in the full interview with Tabata, so check it out over at Polygon. Tabata discusses the changing Japanese marketplace, his goals for the massive RPG, and his thoughts on handheld gaming’s future.
