Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Patcher, who recently said he thinks the PlayStation 5 will be out in 2019, also told GamingBolt that he thinks the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro will get $50 price drops this holiday:
I don’t think Microsoft is all that competitive. Xbox One S is priced the same as the PS4, and I don’t think they are competitive at all with the Xbox One X, currently priced at [$499, $100 more] than the PS4 Pro, and highly likely to be priced $150 more than the PS4 Pro by holiday. My guess is, Sony will cut the everyday PS4 price to $249, and the PS4 Pro price to $349 this holiday, and Microsoft will be too expensive, so Sony will keep its price advantage this holiday.
It’s worth noting that Pachter previously expected the PS4’s price to drop to $199.99 this year. Additionally, Sony said at E3 that they have no plans to drop the PS4 Pro’s price.
Since Black Friday 2016, Sony temporarily dropped the PS4 Slim’s price to $249.99 USD several times.
In a separate interview with GamingBolt, Pachter compared the upcoming Xbox One and PS4 exclusives, saying State of Decay and Days Gone are both zombie games, Forza Motorsport 7 and Gran Turismo Sport are both great racing games – but he’s never heard anyone say they bought a console “because of its racing game” – and Sea of Thieves “looks stupid.” He added, “So I don’t think the announced lineup looks as appealing as PlayStation.”
He then continued by offering up his reasons for why the PS4 is so far ahead of the Xbox One this generation:
That said, I think exclusives only make a difference to about a fifth of the market, 20%. Sony is outselling Microsoft literally two to one, mostly because they screwed up so badly with PS3, but done such a great job with PS1 and PS2; they’re winning back that audience… Outside the US – they are not outselling Xbox 2:1 in the US, it’s probably closer to 11:10 – but guys outside the US, they were PlayStation and PS2 owners, and they’re coming back home to PS4 this time. So I think that‘s the biggest differentiator, these guys were PlayStation households. Sony just has a huge advantage everywhere in the world.
