Ubisoft Turned Skull & Bones Into a New IP to Give Its Developers More Freedom

It’s easy to see where the inspiration for Ubisoft’s upcoming title, Skull & Bones, comes from. The studio first introduced pirates and naval battles in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which wooed over many players and ended up becoming one of the most requested features in future entries. But why did Ubisoft decide to turn Skull & Bones into an entirely new franchise?

In an interview with GameSpot, Ubisoft Singapore managing director Olivier de Rotalier and CEO Yves Guillemot revealed that they wanted to give developers more freedom to live out their pirate fantasies without the restriction of being a part of Assassin’s Creed.

“After Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, [we wanted] to stay in the pirate fantasy and to make it bigger and stronger,” said de Rotalier, with Guillemot adding, “We didn’t want the limits – creating a new IP gives you the chance to do whatever you want. It’s a way to get more freedom.”

The duo said that they have faith in the new IP and that they want to support it long-term.

“We are convinced that the core gameplay that we are building is big enough to experience on the long term and keep people engaged,” explained de Rotalier. “We have a plan to make it last.”

Skull & Bones releases in fall 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For the full interview, head over to the link below.
