Sony Bungie Deal Generated More Twitter Buzz Than Microsoft Activision Deal

Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is much bigger than the Sony Bungie deal but it’s the latter that has somehow seen more discourse on Twitter than the former. That’s according to Rishi Chadha, the global head of creator and gaming content partnerships at Twitter. In an interesting thread, Sony’s acquisition of Bungie was right up there with FromSoftware’s Elden Ring in seeing some of the highest gaming tweet volume in Q1 2022.

Sony Bungie acquisition came weeks after Microsoft Activision deal

Sony’s acquisition of Bungie has often been described as the company’s response to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but both console manufacturers had been in correspondence with their respective game companies for a while. Coincidentally, however, the announcements came only weeks apart. Microsoft announced its acquisition in mid January, followed by Sony towards the end of the month.

Elden Ring’s launch day tweet volume and tweets about Fortnite’s new season rounded up the top four topics in Q1 2022. In a follow-up tweet, Chadha revealed the top ten games that are most tweeted about globally. Genshin Impact topped the list followed by Wordle. Ensemble Stars, Apex Legends, and Final Fantasy rounded up to the top five. Elden Ring sat at number seven, which is an impressive position considering the game released in March. Mojang’s ever-popular Minecraft finished at no. 10.

In other news, the latest Gran Turismo 7 update adjusts credit payouts, and Dying Light 2’s New Game Plus is coming later this month.
