A former Virtuos creative director has apologized for Marvel’s Avengers support coming to an end. Virtosu Cezar worked as a creative director at the studio, which co-developed Marvel’s Avengers with Crystal Dynamics.
Marvel’s Avengers support will end in September 2023
Speaking to EDGE magazine (via GamesRadar), Cezar acknowledged that Marvel’s Avengers went through development challenges. He stopped short of divulging details.
“It was a challenging production, let’s say,” Cezar said. “I apologize for that.”
Marvel’s Avengers will not receive any new content after March. Although players are disappointed by the broken promises, the writing has been on the wall for quite some time.
Rumors of Marvel’s Avengers’ future being bleak had been circulating for quite a while before Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix announced the game’s de-listing in September 2023. Following a lackluster launch, Marvel’s Avengers continued to attract criticism for its monetization strategies and what players felt was excessive grinding.
2.5 years seems like a short time for a game of this scale to be pulled off store shelves. What’s worse is that Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix can’t say how long Marvel’s Avengers’ multiplayer servers will remain live. Those who own the game can continue to play solo, but that doesn’t offer much.
