Following a series of poorly-performing mediocre games, Ubisoft seems to be undergoing some sort of an awakening. The company announced last month that in addition to canceling Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ season pass, it’s scrapping the game’s early access. As a result, Ubisoft has now confirmed a price drop for the game’s collector’s edition.
What next for Ubisoft games?
Ubisoft announced the $50 price drop ($229.99 from $279.99) for AC Shadows’ collector’s edition recently in a Discord post. The move came after Star Wars Outlaws bombed, and the company decided to reevaluate its strategies.
It’s hard to imagine that Ubisoft will never return to season passes and early access since they’ve become an industry staple in recent years. But for the time being at least, the company seems to have realized that brand power alone isn’t enough to sell lackluster games with bells and whistles.
Ubisoft has a long road ahead if it wants to return to its former glory. A number of its offices (more than 700 employees) are currently striking after the company decided to force remote workers to upend their lives and transition into an office environment. It’s currently facing a lawsuit for allegedly sharing users’ data with Meta. There are reports of a potential buyout after stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction with the founding Guillemot family.
To top it off, Ubisoft was left embarrassed after AC Shadows’ collector’s edition’s statue revealed an insensitive design that it ended up having to pull. Suffice to say, Ubisoft’s turmoil is far from over.
