While it’s one of From Software‘s most beloved video games, Elden Ring was not its best performing game. That was to be expected as the developer created a truly massive open world which was bound to have some technical hiccups. However, with the reveal of the PS5 Pro’s Game Boost feature, it seemed there was a possibility at having the game run at 60 frames per second. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
PS5 Pro still the best place to play Elden Ring despite some performance hiccups
In an a new video analysis, tech experts Digital Foundry found Elden Ring could not stay at a locked 60 FPS on PS5 Pro in its Quality, Ray Tracing, or Performance graphics options. However, that does not equate to a poor experience. The PS5 Pro is still the best console to play From Software’s award winning game despite its slight performance hiccups.
Elden Ring’s Quality Mode targets a native 4K resolution. On the PS5 Pro, much of the game does actually hit 60 FPS, but it isn’t consistent. The game seems to stay within the 50s, with some instances of it dipping into the 40s. As VRR support doesn’t work under 48 FPS, this is a bit of an issue. However, since the game seems to run mostly within 50 to 60 FPS, players with a compatible display can expect a generally fluid experience.
Performance Mode is where it was theorized Elden Ring could keep a locked 60 FPS. The mode targets 60 FPS by using dynamic resolution scaling (DRS) with a resolution range between 1512p and native 4K. However, despite its less strenuous settings, it does not maintain that target. This may be due to issues with the game’s DRS system running on the PS5 Pro or CPU limitations.
The least astounding of the bunch is Elden Rings Ray Tracing mode. It seems even if the PS5 Pro could utilize the full power of its upgraded GPU, it would still struggle to maintain a locked 60 FPS. It was also found that unlike a PC, the PS5 Pro does not tap into any extra ray tracing features with its new and improved GPU.
While the improvements may not be as spectacular as the branded PS5 Pro enhanced updates, game boost may help improve performance on just about any game played on the new console. Even backwards compatible PS4 games should see improvements.
