Sony is no stranger to crafting and sharing unique — and sometimes bizarre — concepts, and its CES 2025 presentation was no exception. At this year’s event, the company debuted what it called Sony’s “future immersive entertainment” concept, which allows players to — among other things — smell what they’re playing. The official trailer for the concept features Naughty Dog‘s The Last of Us.

The concept revolves around surrounding players with technology like Sony’s Crystal LED panels running a video game with “engaging audio, haptics, scent, and atmospherics.” Yes, scent.
The idea here is to make players feel like they’re actually in the game but without a chunky VR headset. The video below shows players holding replica weapons in a controlled setting, surrounded the LED panels running The Last of Us.
Sony says it’s in a unique position to fully immerse players by leveraging its technology. “We have many more stories for you to explore,” the company said.
Although this is just proof-of-concept, we can imagine Sony actually turning this into reality as it continues to look for ways to expand its entertainment business. It certainly helps that the company has a solid portfolio of entertainment IP.
