We’re back with yet another review for a FuturLab PlayStation Vita title, Coconut Dodge: Revitalised, a minimalistic collect-em-all. Having missed out on Clawrence’s adventures in Coconut Dodge’s previous forms, yet thoroughly enjoying FuturLab’s previous effort, I was excited to let them give me crabs.
How Much Is It?
$2.99/£1.99
What’s the Story?
You’re a crab named Clawrence and you collect treasure! That’s it…
What Do You Do?
The goal of Coconut Dodge: Revitalised is to collect as much treasure as possible, while avoiding getting hit three times by the falling coconuts. You do this by moving Clawrence back and forth along the bottom of the screen, choosing between three different speeds for the crab.
If you happen to die, you must then restart from the beginning, with everything repeating in almost the exact same way every time.
How Does it Look?
As you can tell by the screenshots, it’s a pretty basic looking game, with the background staying mostly static (there are a few things that happen, but not much), and all you really see if Clawrence moving back and forth, with the treasure and coconuts falling.
How Long is It?
Being an endless game, the factor that decides how long you play Coconut Dodge: Revitalised is how much you enjoy it. You could play it for thirty minutes, get bored, and never touch it again. Or, you could get the hang of it right away, and spend hours trying to hone your craft in order to top the online leaderboards.
Past the main game, there are just a few little minigames that can be fun distractions, though I didn’t enjoy them nearly as much as the main game.
Is it Hard?
You can probably guess the answer to this based on my previous comment, but Coconut Dodge: Revitalised is very easy in the beginning, then gets quite difficult in the later stages. While you can just use the slowest speed to get through the early portions, the further you get means you need lightning quick reflexes to dodge those coconuts, which is a tough task to say the least.
Is it Fun?
For me, I started to get bored with Coconut Dodge: Revitalised after about an hour, mostly because the early stages are really boring. I then took a break and came back to it a couple hours later, getting further than I ever had before, enjoying myself as the difficulty ramped up.
Is it Worth the Money and Should You Buy It?
Sitting at $2.99/£1.99, it certainly isn’t the most expensive game in the world, though it is $2 more than the Minis version that was previously released. If you don’t mind repeating the same boring beginning after every restart, or are a big fan of FuturLab, I’d say Coconut Dodge: Revitalised is worth a download at full price. Otherwise, you might want to wait for this to go 50% off or less.
